Hydraulic equipment does the heavy lifting in Oman’s ports, steel plants, quarries and construction sites. Grabs unload bulk cargo, cylinders lift and clamp, and power packs drive presses and handling systems. When a hydraulic system leaks, loses pressure or overheats, production slows or stops. This guide explains how WAT Engineering services and overhauls hydraulic equipment such as grabs, cylinders, pumps, power packs and valves, and what you can do to keep your equipment running longer between repairs.
Hydraulic equipment we service
- Grabs: clamshell grabs, orange-peel grabs, scrap grabs and bulk material grabs used on cranes and ship unloaders
- Hydraulic cylinders: lifting, tilting, clamping and steering cylinders of all sizes
- Hydraulic power packs (HPUs): reservoirs, pumps, motors, coolers and filtration
- Pumps and motors: gear, vane and piston types
- Valves and manifolds: directional, relief and proportional valves
- Hoses, fittings and pipework: replacement, routing and pressure testing
Common hydraulic problems
Most hydraulic failures give warning signs first. Call us if you notice:
- Oil leaks at cylinder rods, hoses, fittings or seals
- Slow or jerky movement, or a grab that will not close fully
- Loss of pressure, or a cylinder that drifts under load
- Overheating oil or a noisy pump
- Scored, bent or pitted cylinder rods
- Worn pins, bushes and cutting edges on grabs
In Oman’s dusty, hot conditions, contaminated oil and failed seals are the most common root causes. Dust enters through worn wipers and seals, wears internal parts, and starts a cycle of leaks and pressure loss.
How we overhaul a hydraulic grab
Grabs work in some of the harshest conditions in any plant: impact loads, abrasive material and constant cycling. A full grab overhaul at WAT typically includes:
- Inspection and fault report: we record wear, cracks, leaks and the condition of every major part before work starts, with photos.
- Strip-down and cleaning: the grab is dismantled and cleaned so hidden cracks and wear can be seen.
- Structural repair: cracked plates and shells are repaired by welding, and worn areas are built up or replaced.
- Pins, bushes and edges: worn pins and bushes are replaced or machined, and cutting edges or teeth are renewed.
- Hydraulic work: cylinders are resealed or rebuilt, hoses and fittings are replaced, and valves are checked.
- Protective coating: the grab is blasted and repainted to protect it from corrosion. See our protective coating services.
- Testing: the grab is reassembled, function tested and pressure tested before return to service.
Hydraulic cylinder repair
A cylinder repair usually costs far less than a new cylinder and can be done faster than importing a replacement. Our cylinder service covers:
- Strip-down, cleaning and measurement of the barrel, rod, piston and gland
- Replacement of seals, wipers and wear rings with the correct type for the duty
- Rod straightening, or rod replacement where it is badly bent or pitted
- Barrel honing to remove scoring
- Reassembly and pressure testing for leaks and drift
Power pack, pump and valve servicing
For hydraulic power units and drive systems, we check and service:
- Oil condition, and oil change or filtration to remove contamination
- Filters, breathers and suction strainers
- Pump condition, pressure and flow
- Relief valve settings and system pressures
- Electric motors driving the pumps. See our motor repair services.
- Oil coolers, especially important in Oman’s summer heat
Preventive maintenance tips
A few simple habits extend the life of hydraulic equipment significantly:
- Keep oil clean: change filters on schedule and keep reservoirs and breathers sealed against dust.
- Inspect daily: look for leaks, damaged hoses and scored rods before each shift.
- Grease pins and bushes: regular greasing of grab pivots prevents rapid wear.
- Watch temperature: oil running too hot breaks down quickly and damages seals.
- Fix small leaks early: a leaking seal lets dirt in and quickly turns into a major repair.
Workshop and on-site service across Oman
We service hydraulic equipment in our workshop in Misfah, Muscat, and our team can work on site across Oman, including Sohar and Duqm, for equipment that cannot easily be moved. Planned shutdowns are the best time for major overhauls. Contact us early so parts and seals can be ready before the shutdown starts.
